Annual Giving Manager

Department: Development
Supervisor: Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship
Status: Full-time, exempt position
Location: PLF’s Arlington, VA, office

Pacific Legal Foundation—the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty—seeks an energetic and innovative Annual Giving Manager responsible for cultivating and stewarding PLF’s mid-level donors, with the goal of increasing engagement and retention, and identifying potential major gift prospects for qualification. This role will implement a one-to-some donor strategy through phone, mail, and email.

As a national nonprofit organization, PLF is 100% funded by private contributions from thousands of donors across the country. Our Development team is focused on cultivating strong relationships between PLF and our donors to secure the necessary financial resources for our important work defending liberty and justice for all.


  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 600 donors. This includes donors in the $1,000-$2,500 range, but may also include some major donor stewardship.
  • Create and implement a regular, consistent communication plan to inform and engage donors in the portfolio through one-to-some communication.
  • Collaborate with the Annual Giving Officer and Donor Relations team to identify and cultivate donors with potential to move into the major gifts pipeline.
  • Create and manage a process for regularly reviewing lapsed mid-level, major, and regular donors to add to the mid-level portfolio.
  • Conduct prospect research on current and prospective donors to identify those who warrant additional attention.
  • Evaluate processes, metrics, and benchmarks to ensure effective mid-level strategies.
  • Handle general donor inquiries (questions, updates, issues).
  • Make thank you calls to donors in the $250-$999 range.
  • Special projects as assigned.


  • Meet annual retention, engagement, and upgrade goals for the mid-level donor pool.
  • Ensure that all monthly and quarterly mid-level touch targets are met.
  • Create content for donor updates in partnership with the Communication team.
  • Deploy digital marketing or mass email technology in cultivating and stewarding donors.
  • Accurately articulate PLF’s mission, objectives, cases, and initiatives with clarity, enthusiasm, and conviction. Handle all donor interactions with the highest levels of honesty, integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Ensure that all contacts, actions, and results for donors are logged in a timely and thorough manner, and in accordance with PLF’s established protocols.
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with other members of the Development team and with other PLF colleagues.


  • 1-3 years of experience in fundraising or sales, preferably stewarding personal or one-to-some donor/client relationships. We will consider applicants with demonstrated transferrable skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and customer service skills.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to coordinate with fundraising team members and other PLF departments.
  • Proficiency with technology, including database management skills and an understanding of how to use a CRM to inform work. Experience in Raiser’s Edge is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, specifically over the phone.
  • Knowledge of the liberty movement and demonstrated interest in contemporary policy discussions.
  • Experience with distilling and explaining complex ideas.
  • Commitment to excellence.
