Donor Relations Officer

You: A seasoned major gift officer with strong interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and high energy. You care deeply about donors—their interests and passions, their philanthropic goals, and their confidentiality—and have a proven track record of cultivating relationships, making big asks (when appropriate), and successfully managing a relatively large portfolio. You are a dedicated freedom fighter who is eager to work with a team equally passionate about defending the Constitution and defeating Big Government.

Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and passionate for the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.

Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 14 victories out of 16 cases litigated at the Court—so far. We have more than a hundred active cases across the nation, and a growing number of legislative and administrative policy wins.

We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.

Here’s what you get to do in this role:

Reporting to the Director of Donor Relations, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects, providing them with a top-notch donor experience. You’ll develop and maintain strong relationships with your donors by implementing one-to-one donor strategies through face-to-face visits, phone calls, emails, notes, and letters to cultivate, solicit, and steward your donors.

You can work physically in any of our offices or virtually. This position requires frequent travel, often to California, but also to other parts of the U.S.

In practice, your specific job duties will include:

  • Managing a portfolio of 70-150 major gift donors and prospects who are currently giving at least $10,000 or giving less than $10,000 but have major gift capacity;
  • Asking donors for their annual gift as well as increases for special projects and also planned gifts;
  • Collaborating with the Director of Donor Relations to craft special asks, develop fundraising plans for your donors, set revenue goals, and execute strategies to reach those goals;
  • Providing top-notch customer service to ensure the best possible experience for donors, including providing them with periodic updates on the use and impact of their gifts;
  • Timely and thoroughly logging all donor interactions in Raiser’s Edge NXT in accordance with PLF’s established protocols.

This role is ideal for someone with:

  • At least three to five years of experience as a major gifts officer, with a demonstrated track record of closing major gifts;
  • Ability to develop a deep and detailed knowledge of each assigned donor and design an individualized plan of action for each donor;
  • Ability to handle all donor interactions with the highest levels of honesty, integrity, discretion, and professionalism;
  • A passion for, and an ability to accurately articulate; PLF’s mission, objectives, cases, and initiatives with clarity, enthusiasm, and conviction.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly and nationally to visit donors and participate in team get-togethers;
  • Comfort and proficiency with technology—including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Zoom, and fundraising database software (Raiser’s Edge NXT experience is a plus).
  • Ability to work independently without constant direct supervision.
