Fighting for My Home

Riviera Beach, Florida, resident Princess Wells explains why she is fighting against the city's plans to seize her home for private development. Excerpt:

I watched my four children grow up here; my grandchildren spent their first Christmas in our cozy pink house. It's the place the family comes for the holidays, and every Christmas I make sure the door is always open for anyone — whether they are family, a neighbor or someone in need.

I first heard about the eminent domain situation at a community meeting. As I was strategizing with an area priest on how we could best serve the neighborhood kids, one of my neighbors came up and told us that the government said it might kick some of us out of our homes just to make way for wealthier people. I was shocked.
