Today, Board of Equalization Vice Chair Michelle Steel published a commentary on FlashReport discussing PLF’s latest Prop. 209 lawsuit. As we mentioned last week, our lawsuit is challenging the use of race, ethnicity, and sex in selecting members to the California Citizen Redistricting Commission.

Vice Chair Steel correctly notes the importance of this lawsuit: “This lawsuit will be the first legal challenge to the redistricting commission’s selection process. More importantly, when this lawsuit succeeds in court, it will set a precedent for how Prop. 209 is applied throughout state hiring – making it clear that the prohibition on race- and sex-based discrimination for state employment is absolute and applicable to all forms of hiring, including state boards and commissions.”

There has yet to be a case asking courts to apply Proposition 209 to state boards and commissions and this lawsuit does so. Again, PLF is at the forefront of pressing the legal system to recognize equal rights for all citizens.
