Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoes redevelopment bill

In addition to vetoing the racially discriminatory AB 2047, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger also said no yesterday to AB 2531, which I blogged about earlier. He made clear in his veto message that local governments can use their redevelopment powers only to eliminate existing blight in urban neighborhoods, and not for the purposes of economic development generally. That’s a small victory, but it’s very helpful in a state where the redevelopment industry sees itself as charged with directing the state’s economy as a whole.
