Yesterday, as part of this week's series on the valley elderberry longhorn beetle, I discussed Bob Slobe's predicament and how unnessary beetle regulations result in a double standard: Slobe and private property owners give up their property rights and are forced to maintain their land as pristine beetle habitat without compensation, while Sacramento County allows for beetle habitat destruction and environmental degradation at the American River Parkway without any sort of harassment from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Sacramento Press has also looked into this issue and recently did a nice profile of the problems at the Parkway, describing a scene of "[t]rash, hypodermic needles and pornographic magazines" throughout a two-mile stretch of the Parkway in Sacramento.

Kudos to the Press for its article, which is available here.
