PLF and school choice

As PLF continues to celebrate School Choice Week 2014, here’s a look at some of the important school choice cases that we litigated last year:

• In Meredith v. Daniels, the Indiana Supreme Court upheld a statewide school voucher program.  The Indiana voucher program was one of the most ambitious school choice plans in in the country.
• We are representing the legislators who sponsored and fought for New Hampshire’s statewide tax credit program in Duncan v. New Hampshire.  That case is currently pending before the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
• We also helped secure a victory for Georgia charter school kids in Atlanta Public Schools v. Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School.  In that case, the Atlanta Public School system tried to take funds from charter school kids to pay for the public schools’ unfunded pension liabilities. The Georgia Supreme Court rejected that attempt.
• And we were also busy helping charter school students in California.  Two big cases — Bullis Charter School v. Los Altos School District and California Charter School Association v. Los Angeles Unified School District — will determine the continued viability of charter schools in California. Both cases involve attempt by the old anti-choice advocates to squeeze out charter school kids from the funds they are entitled to under the law. 

As you can see, 2013 was an important year for school choice, and PLF is determined to continue to fight for the rights of parents and students.  2014 is already shaping up to be another important year for school choice, but we are confident that the country — and the courts — will continue to move towards more choice in education.
