PLF applauds nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court

Sacramento, CA and Washington, DC; January 31, 2017: Responding to today’s nomination announcement, Pacific Legal Foundation praised the qualifications and fitness of Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.

“Judge Gorsuch is superbly well qualified to serve on the Supreme Court and his prior opinions demonstrate a careful effort to enforce the text of the Constitution and laws as they are written,” said Todd Gaziano, Executive Director of PLF’s DC Center and Senior Fellow in Constitutional Law. “Federal judges, especially justices of the Supreme Court, play an essential role in protecting individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution, including property rights, economic liberty, freedom of speech, and other limits on the power of government regulators.

“No one knows how a justice will vote on future cases, and no one should want a justice to prejudge those cases,” Gaziano noted. “What we need are independent judges of ability who are committed to the text and original understanding of the Constitution. Such judges have the right approach to judicial decision-making, which limits personal bias and preferences and upholds the rule of law. Judge Gorsuch has demonstrated this kind of fidelity, and he is also a critical legal thinker and clear writer.”

“PLF has a three-decade long winning streak vindicating individual rights and enforcing constitutional limits on government power in landmark victories at the Supreme Court,” said PLF President and CEO Steven Anderson. “We look forward to arguing future cases before Judge Gorsuch. Nevertheless, our confidence for continued success ultimately rests not on the configuration of the court but on the power of our principles. Individual liberty is guaranteed to all Americans, of all beliefs and backgrounds, and we have successfully defended the Constitution’s promise — and will continue in the future — by winning support from judges across the philosophical spectrum.”
