Separation of Powers Attorney

Work From Anywhere in the U.S.

You: An entrepreneurial freedom fighter with a passion for, and experience in, administrative law or civil litigation. You find and win cutting-edge civil rights cases across the country. You will become a national spokesperson for separation of powers—you will speak at conferences, engage the media, and publish scholarship on the structural protections of the Constitution, agency abuse, and the proper role of government. You will fight the administrative state. You are a self-starter, natural leader, and willing collaborator who will elevate PLF attorneys to be the best litigators in the nation. You have a demonstrated dedication to public interest law and civil rights throughout your career.

Them: Federal and state agencies that are abusing their power and stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s no shortage of agencies that ignore the constitutional separation of powers. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in, and passionate for, the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.

Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 18 victories out of 20 litigated at the Court—including THREE victories last term. We also have more than a hundred active cases across the nation.

We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.

Here’s what you get to do in this role:

You will generate and lead high-profile cases in PLF’s Separation of Powers Program. PLF’s separation of powers litigation is unparalleled. We’ve won multiple cases before the Supreme Court, guaranteeing individuals their day in court when faced with ruinous fines or even criminal liability. In the past year alone, our Separation of Powers litigators have won cases: wholly eliminating agency deference in Ohio, enjoining a federal minimum-wage regulation, and stopping the CFPB from exceeding its authority.

You will find and win the next important Supreme Court case enforcing individuals’ rights through the Constitution’s structural protections. Your ideas will help shape PLF strategy by identifying and litigating emerging separation of powers theories. And you will be recognized as a nationwide leader on administrative and constitutional law: giving speeches, attending conferences, appearing on radio and television, and publishing op-eds and scholarly articles on these issues.

You will work on teams with junior and senior attorneys, providing your expertise and knowledge and elevating the talent and skill of our attorneys. You will have the latitude to think big and the resources to execute. You will be at the forefront of shaping the enforcement of the Constitution for all Americans.

In a nutshell, we’re seeking someone who’s passionate about liberty, the Constitution, and administrative law, someone who is confident and magnanimous, and someone who is a bold and relentless freedom fighter.

Getting down to brass tacks, your specific job duties likely will include:

  • Finding, developing, litigating—and winning—important separation of powers cases.
  • Advocating for separation of powers both philosophically and practically. Speaking with organizations, trade groups, academia, and media to advance PLF’s strategic goals. (A deep knowledge of the moral and constitutional basis for the Constitution’s structural protections is a huge plus.)
  • Writing persuasive pieces for both scholarly and lay audiences. Drafting op-eds, journal articles, and blog posts.
  • Leading and joining other attorneys into battle and helping to set the agenda of the next years of PLF’s separation of powers program.

This role is ideal for someone with:

  • Experience litigating administrative law and/or civil rights cases
  • A track record of successful litigation
  • Outstanding interpersonal communications skills
  • A knowledge of, and passion for, the ideas of freedom and individual liberty
  • A willingness to travel

Graphic Designer

You: You are a tastemaker. You know the rules of composition, color theory, texture, and information hierarchy and can apply them to any medium—be it photography, illustration, or an event. You also know when to break those rules. But the one rule you never break is brand consistency. You understand that every piece of content needs to be in spiritual harmony with a company’s personality. Perhaps you have a few years of graphic design under your belt and aspire to be an art director someday. Or maybe you’re an experienced designer seeking a better work-life balance than an agency can provide. If you’re our person, this role will be adjusted to you.

Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. You’ll help PLF differentiate from its competition and increase its reputation amongst audiences. You’ll own PLF’s design queue, assigning projects to external designers as needed to hit deadlines. You’ll execute bold designs for projects as lean as postcards and t-shirts to as large as a Las Vegas takeover for UFC 300. You’ll develop your skills, learning from the best in the world. With you in this role, PLF will draw new attention and become a more effective champion for our clients and for liberty.

Getting down to brass tacks, your specific job duties likely will include:

  • Supporting the brand director in an upcoming brand refresh, including the redesign of existing brand assets.
  • Designing new assets, including publications, advertising, webpages, social media assets, apparel, and more.
  • Managing and prioritizing the design workflow, ensuring all assets are delivered on time.
  • Onboarding and supervising external designers, to supplement and extend your personal capacity.
  • Concepting visual themes and mood boards for omnichannel campaigns and larger projects.
  • Organizing various design deliverables and image formats on our internal cloud storage platform.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • A passion for visual storytelling.
  • Background in graphic design/digital illustration.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • An excitement for concepting original ideas and taking bold creative swings.
  • Basic experience in photography and photo-editing encouraged, but not required.

Social Media Marketer

Work From Anywhere in the U.S.

You: You are passionate about advancing liberty and want to speak directly to a growing audience. You’re a marketing-savvy storyteller who knows how to catch someone’s attention with a social media post. Your friends would probably classify you as “too online”—you’re fluent in the language, norms, trends, and memes of X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit. You’re creative, willing to push boundaries, and unafraid to engage with influencers in legal, policy, media, and advocacy spaces.

Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in, and passionate for, the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.

We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next-generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.

Here’s what you get to do in this role:

You’ll get audiences excited about and invested in PLF’s cases, policy work, and mission, growing the organization’s social media audience and mobilizing them to take actions. You’ll turn case stories into pithy posts and threads, drawing on PLF’s incredible database of client interviews, photography, film, and legal documents to create content that will draw outrage, sympathy, excitement, and support from existing followers and new prospects. You’ll draw inspiration from outside the nonprofit world—from cutting-edge ad campaigns, films, startups, and art—to put PLF’s social media program on the highest playing field. You won’t be afraid to disrupt the status quo; you’ll bring new ideas to PLF, along with a bias toward action. With you in this role, PLF will draw new attention and will become a bigger, more effective champion for our clients and for liberty.

The role is somewhat flexible and can be adjusted to accommodate your strengths and gaps in your knowledge. If you have graphic design experience, you’ll hit the ground running designing graphics for social channels. If you’re stronger at writing than design or video editing, we may adjust the scope of your responsibilities or offer you training.

Getting down to brass tacks, your specific job duties likely will include:

  • Crafting content for X, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, including commissioning graphic design work.
  • Managing a social media calendar, including identifying creative external opportunities to engage aligned audiences. (See PLF’s recent UFC campaign as an example.)
  • Turning clips from PLF videos into eye-catching reels and YouTube shorts.
  • Strategizing and executing new ways to grow our social media audience, including paid advertising and live conversations like X Spaces.
  • Strategizing new social media, advertising, and incentive programs to generate leads.
  • Using analytics to learn and report on our social media engagement and growth.
  • Monitoring certain topics to show how PLF’s social media work has made or can make an impact on conversations.

This role is ideal for someone who has at least three years of experience growing audiences on social media platforms—in particular X, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn—and has used social media monitoring platforms (we use Hootsuite Insights). Experience with graphic design software—including Adobe Photoshop or Canva—and video editing software—including Adobe Premiere or iMovie—is a bonus.

Foundation Relations Officer

Fully Remote • Work From Anywhere in the U.S.

You: A fundraising professional with a passion for liberty and winning. You’re a talented writer and meticulous editor who knows how to compose successful proposals and reports. And now you’re looking to join the grant-seeking efforts of a major organization dedicated to advancing liberty and reining in government overreach.

Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and passionate for the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.

Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public-interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 18 victories out of 20 litigated there. We also have more than a hundred active cases across the nation.

PLF is a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game. We want to win.

Here’s what you get to do in this role:

You will join PLF’s development team to secure funding from foundations and other grant makers who share our commitment to advancing individual liberty. You’ll apply your well-honed writing and messaging talents to craft successful proposals and reports tailored to the interests and requirements of the funders. To ensure sufficient financial resources for PLF’s ambitious growth plans, you will also use your considerable knowledge of the pro-liberty movement and likeminded foundations to identify and secure grants from new potential funders. As part of our grants team, you will compose letters, proposals, and reports, review and approve drafts, perform research, and meet with funders. You will have the latitude to think big and the resources to execute.

PLF wants you to be relentless, confident, and show passion toward individual liberty, freedom, and taking down the big, bad guy.

Summary:

The Foundation Relations Officer plays a key role in PLF’s development team efforts to secure funding from foundations and other grant makers who share our commitment to advancing individual liberty.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Revise proposals and grants after the review process and prepare them for final submission.

  • With team collaboration, devise and incorporate a plan for research and approach to new foundation prospects.
