Programs Manager

You: You’re passionate about designing programs and curricula that educate and engage diverse audiences, and you’re eager to put your skills to work developing unique program content that engages a broad portfolio of audiences on PLF’s legal work in a tangible way. Most importantly, you’re not content with maintaining the status quo and have big ideas about how to educate, engage, and inspire our audiences with both in-person and virtual programming.

Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and passionate for the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.

Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 14 victories out of 16 cases heard by the Court. We also have more than a hundred active cases across the nation.

We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.

Here’s what you get to do in this role:

You’ll work across the organization to identify and capitalize on opportunities for PLF to advance the national conversation on our areas of expertise. Then, you’ll be responsible for designing programming that spurs deep discussion, inspires attendees to action, and invites program participants to carefully consider complex legal and policy issues. In essence, your job is to design industry-leading conversations about some of our country’s most pressing issues.

You’ll report directly to the Outreach Director and work in collaboration with the Events Manager to develop a comprehensive portfolio of programming that advances PLF’s legal, public education, and legislative goals. This includes both in-person and virtual programming ranging from hour-long webinars to multi-day conferences and seminars. While the Events Manager oversees the logistics, budget, and measurement side of things, you’ll own the content and curriculum.

In practice, your specific job duties will likely include:

  • Designing approximately 20-25 PLF hosted events per year, with a particular emphasis on programming-heavy events. This portfolio includes approximately 6-8 full day/multi day policy conferences and law symposia, and 12+ virtual events for audiences of 50-500 attendees.
  • Identifying opportunities for new PLF programming across our issue areas, with an eye towards engaging the full spectrum of our target audience segments
  • Developing program proposals, including: event descriptions, agendas, and speaker line-ups
  • Working with external partners to develop PLF topics and curriculum for their events and conferences
  • Providing on-site support for in-person events as needed

This role is ideal for someone with:

  • 3+ years of experience in program management, curriculum development, or events
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple individuals simultaneously
  • Comfort traveling at least 30% of the time including approximately 4-5 trips/year to PLF offices (if working remote)
  • Ability to problem solve and boil down complex legal concepts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A demonstrated interest in, and knowledge of, contemporary legal and policy issues—as well as thought leaders in these areas
  • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously
  • Alignment with and passion for the mission of PLF
