Pacific Legal Foundation is hosting an invitation-only cocktail reception at the National Archives on the evening of July 9, featuring a book signing and toast from Arthur C. Brooks. We would be delighted if you would join us.
The Declaration of Independence was the original act of American defiance.
Its signers were not soldiers; they were lawyers, merchants, doctors, scientists, and landowners who believed they were signing their “death warrant,” as Pennsylvania doctor Benjamin Rush put it. They refused to accept control over their lives. They rejected the status quo. And they laid out an unflinching argument against tyranny—a dissent.
Please join us at the National Archives for a cocktail party in front of the Declaration itself to celebrate its spirit of defiance, which has animated the American character ever since.
We’ll hear brief remarks from Arthur C. Brooks, Harvard professor, social scientist, and #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Meaning of Your Life.
We’ll also celebrate the launch of the new Pacific Legal Foundation podcast In Dissent, hosted by Anastasia Boden, who treats the Declaration as a legal dissent and follows its promises to Supreme Court cases that tested them.
The pursuit of happiness was not a guarantee; it was an invitation—to dissent, to insist on better, to refuse control. PLF has represented dissenting voices for over 50 years. Now, as we mark the 250th anniversary of America’s Founding, we’re toasting to the defiance that started it all.
This event is invitation-only. If you would like to learn more, please contact the events team.
