Gus Smythe

Gus Smythe is a research assistant working with PLF’s Constitutional Scholarship team, helping to advocate for PLF’s policies to a broad audience.  

He previously worked for several different members of Congress in various capacities, most notably as staff assistant and driver for Texas Senator John Cornyn. Gus began his journey into politics during college, where he interned on several congressional campaigns and in the Texas State Legislature. He became a believer in liberty after reading The Machinery of Freedom by David Friedman. Gus graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with undergraduate degrees in government and philosophy.  

He lives in downtown Washington, DC, a brisk walk from the U.S. Capitol. In his spare time, he enjoys reading philosophy and going on hikes and is a self-described football fanatic.
